Meeting Ginger

I was sleeping on the doorway and someone was next to me. Oh! I’m on the doorway because I was kicked out by the rat man. I tried to protest because I still had more days to spend but obviously he was strict.

Ok. Let’s go back to the story. I took my sleeping bag out and wriggled inside. Later on, I heard some footsteps and thought, keep going. Please go past, but he didn’t. I opened my eyes and asked him ‘This your place?’ Yeah...it was stupid question. He just asked me to shove up to spread his roll.

He lay down next to me. There were two of us. I felt I ought to say something so I said, ‘Been doing long?’ He said ‘Six, seven months.’ His name was Ginger, and it wasn’t his real name. It was a nickname. So, I also told him my nickname ‘Link’. He said he was hungry so I gave him sneaker because I didn’t like it. Then we fell in sleep.

There were two officers. A man and a woman. They stood back and watched as while we rolled our bags and strapped them to our packs. They wanted us to leave because we were in somebody’s doorway.

We went to an all-night kebab house Ginger knew about it. We had some coffee and talked. He told me lots of things. He said that DSS won’t help me. Most of time, they say that it is our fault to come out from the house. So, I should find work as fast as I can.

Ginger showed me the shower place after we finished eating. We were walking on the street then I saw one building similar to a church. Ginger told me that they give us the food so we entered and had some breads and a cup of coffee.
This is Ginger.

Independence

Yesterday, I was at the station to go to London and Carole came to see me. She gave me a big hug and some money.

I rode on the train and came to London where I am right now. I tried to find some jobs and shelter to stay.

When I arrived, I was finding places to live. Well, every place was expensive. I went to one sleazoid place and it wasn’t negotiable either. I knocked on the door, and then one came out. He said, ‘fifty for week’. I didn’t like it so I tried to negotiate with him but he was strict. He said ‘take it or leave.’ So I made second mistake. I took it... Which is really expensive, but it was good. I was thankful at that moment.

Today, I went out to look for work. First, I went to Job Center but the woman there said I should go to Careers Office because I wasn’t eighteen. When I went there, I filled in a form and they said I also should go to DSS…

I went to DSS and filled in another form. I did an interview, and the guy asked me a lot of stuff about home. He said it might take several weeks. That’s when I got nervous because I had a room for two weeks, maximum. It shouldn’t take more than two weeks..uh...

A Nightmare of Christmas

Christmas didn’t help me. I actually spent my Christmas with my sister but I kind of felt angry and sad. This morning I went to Carole’s house.

Carole’s boyfriend was also there… We started with giving out presents. My mum and Carole put their money together and prepared a present for me and I expected with excitement. When I opened it, I kind of felt betrayed from them (My mum and sister). Well, they gave only meant to be kind but it said something to me.

They gave me a sleeping bag and do you know what is that mean? It means that they don’t care about me sleeping on the street and not wanting me to go back to home! Well, I said thank you because at least it was waterproof, but didn’t like the present.

Boxing day came, and my mum came round with Vince. They came for dinner and stayed until one o’clock next morning. Of course everybody got drunk except for me. Then Vince started to cracks about me.

It didn’t feel like peace on earth. Worst thing was, nobody stuck up for me. I just left that house. It was worst Christmas ever.

Bye my family…

My name is Link. Its not my real name but you can call me like that. I was born March 20th, 1977 in Bradford, Yorkshire. Today was kind of a hard day for me.

I became homeless.  Why? Well, I feel sorry for my mum but I thought being homeless was better than staying with Vince. Vince, he is not my real father. He is just my mums boyfriend.

Our family was as happy as others but when I was 14 years old, my father ran away. Thats how my mum became to meet Vince. I hate him. My mum changed after she met Vince.

Once, when I was out, he locked me out of the house and next morning. When I went to my house again, he started to slap my head for going off and worrying mum. He didn't like me so I decided to go out but Im also kind of kicked out. I WONT GO BACK TO MY HOME AGAIN.

Im back. I was in Caroles house to take a shower and to eat. Carole is my sister who is 4 years older than me. When I went there I also noticed that Chris (My sisters boyfriend) doesn't want me to go to his house again.  Carole might be catching hell from him when I go to her house more and more, so I decided to not to visit her again.

Now I am sitting on the doorway in Bradford and I saw lots of people I know. I saw my neighborhood, friend who was in my school, and I also even saw my teacher. I felt little down.

I didn't have any money. Even though we, the homeless people beg, most of the passers pass us and ignoring. We are invisible to them.

It was a very tired day. Bye
